The President of the Popular Party (PP-opposition) and Vice-President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Mrs. Cristina Tavis, reaffirmed on Monday in Tenerife the engagement of its party in supporting Saharawi people’s right to self-determination, conforming to the UN’s resolutions, a Saharawi source indicated on Tuesday in Madrid.

"We must continue to draw attention on the violations of freedoms and of the inalienable rights of the Saharawi people", she underlined during an interview with the POLISARIO Front’s delegate in Tenerife, Hamdi Mansour, who was accompanied by the Vice-President of the Association of the Friends of the Saharawi People in the Canary Islands, Mr. Alberto Negrin.

"We must resume the policy of consensus regarding the question of Western Sahara and demand the implementation of the UN’s resolutions regarding Saharawi people’s self-determination".

During this meeting, the Popular Party’s official hoped that the next negotiations, planed for August the 10th between POLISARIO Front and Morocco under the auspices of the UN, can be an occasion to "unblock the peace process in Western Sahara within the line of the UN’s resolutions and conforming to the Saharawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination", the same source indicated.

"To implement the self-determination in Western Sahara is not only an international mandate, it is an exercise of a political responsibility", she affirmed.

Mrs. Tavis estimated finally that the collaboration with Western Sahara "can not be limited to the annual reception of some 10.000 Saharawi children in the summer, it must go beyond through the strengthening of our political and economical cooperation" with the Saharawi people.
