Saharawi human rights activist in Scandinavian countries

22 years old Saharawi student and human rights activist, Rabab Amidane, is undertaking a 16 day tour to Norway and Sweden, to raise awareness about the Saharawi students’ situation under Moroccan occupation.

The organising Scandinavian youth and student organisations, stated that the aim of the Saharawi young lady’s tour is to give testimony on the frequent attacks committed by the Moroccan authorities against Saharawi students at universities and high schools in Morocco and Western Sahara .
On the first day of her stay in Norway, July 21st, Amidane was received as an international guest at the summer camp of the Young Liberal Party, where she gave a presentation about the Saharawi students’ situation.
The same day, Amidane met with the Norwegian Prime Minister, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg, who stated that when he was the leader of the Labour Party’s youth organisation AUF, he visited Polisario in Algeria.
Amidane thanked Stoltenberg for the Norwegian foreign policy on the Western Sahara question.
She also met with Mr. Truls Wickholm, member of the Norwegian Parliamet, as well as several of the leaders of the Labour Youth.
From July 24th to 26th, Amidane met in Gothenburg, Sweden, with representatives of the students’ parliament of the Gothenburg University, as well as with the student group of Amnesty International Gothenburg.
Going back to Oslo on July 26th, Amidane met with the Norwegian Students’ Union and the Norwegian Association of Students.
The two organisations, with more than 200.000 members in Norway, expressed their strong support to the struggle the Saharawi students are leading in the occupied zone of Western Sahara and in Moroccan universities.
The same was expressed in a meeting with the Norwegian Students’ and Academics’ International Assistance Fund.
From Saturday July 28 th to Wednesday 1st August, the young Saharawi lady participated at the annual summer camp of the Young Liberals of Norway, which is the organisation that invited her to Norway, in collaboration with the Norwegian Children and Youth Council.
Amidane held talks with Liberal Party’s parliamentarians Mr. Odd Einar Dørum, former Minister in two Norwegian governments and Ms Trine Skei Grande.
The two members of the Liberal Party expressed their strong support for the Saharawi cause, underlining their demand that the Norwegian government recognises the Saharawi Arabic Democratic Republic.
It should be recalled that all the organisations that invited Ms. Amidane had signed last May 23 rd a letter to the Moroccan government demanding the protection of the Saharawi students.
